State Bureau of Vital Records in Jefferson City

The Missouri Bureau of Vital Records is located at 930 Wildwood Drive in Jefferson City, right in Cole County. This office holds the state's central file of death certificates from January 1, 1910 to the present. Their lobby is open Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 3 PM, with appointments recommended. The state office charges the same $14 for the first copy and $11 for additional copies. They accept checks, money orders, and cash. You can also order through VitalChek online or by calling 1-877-817-7363, but since the office is right in town, going in person is often the fastest route for Cole County residents.

How to Get Cole County Death Certificates

There are three main ways to get a death certificate from Cole County. In person is the fastest option. You can go to the Cole County Health Department at 3400 W. Truman Blvd. for records from 1980 onward, or to the state Bureau of Vital Records at 930 Wildwood Drive for records from 1910 onward. Bring a photo ID, fill out the form, and pay the $14 fee. Staff will hand you the certificate on the spot. Additional copies are $11 each.

Mail requests are an option too. Download the application from the Missouri Bureau of Vital Records website and complete it. Include a check or money order for $14, a copy of your photo ID, and a self-addressed stamped envelope. Mail to either the county health department or the state bureau. Allow a couple of weeks for processing through the mail.

VitalChek is the third route. They charge a service fee on top of the $14 base cost. Orders process in 5 to 7 business days. Under RSMo 193.245, certified death certificates cannot be photocopied for official use.

Death Record Fees

Cole County uses the standard Missouri fee schedule under RSMo 193.265. A certified death certificate is $14 for the first copy. Additional copies at the same time are $11 each. These fees are the same at both the county health department and the state bureau. Cash, checks, and money orders are accepted at both offices.
